Rafe feigned interest in his cell phone screen as they drove in silence back to the hacienda.

He never should have kissed her. And he certainly shouldn’t have tried to scrutinize her mentality the way he had up at the viewing tower.

Eva was still hurt and bruised from the calamity that had been her marriage. It was one thing to nudge the woman out of her comfort zone when it came to business. But Rafe had absolutely no right to share his opinions about her personal life.

Given that he was much too damaged to risk any kind of relationship himself, he had no business toying with her emotions by losing control enough to kiss her. So why couldn’t he stop thinking about the way she’d tasted? The way she’d felt in his arms? Rafe let out an ironic laugh and turned to stare out the window.

He was so good at doling out advice. If only he could take some of it to heart himself.

His new home and environment were definitely helping. He’d be a fool to risk having it go south in any way because he couldn’t resist the temptation that was Eva Gato.

The day had grown cloudy by the time they turned in to the gravel driveway of the Gato hacienda. Eva hadn’t done much talking during the ride, and for the life of him he couldn’t think of much to say either. If only he’d kept his mouth closed when it had mattered, back at the tower. But he’d wanted so badly to tell her what was so obvious to him: that she was a talented, smart, accomplished woman. A beautiful one, at that. The only reason Eva doubted herself or her abilities in any way was because of what that scoundrel had done to her.

What was wrong with him? Regardless of his attraction to her, Eva was his employee. He had zero right to speculate about anything beyond her duties as his operations manager. If she had doubts about his business plan, they could sit down and discuss her reservations and come up with ways to address each one.

So that’s what they would do. First thing tomorrow morning, he and Eva would sit down and develop a project plan based on all the concerns she had regarding Gato Rums becoming a supplier to an exclusive San Juan resort, with many more resorts to follow if Rafe got his wish.

He needed Eva’s help if he wanted to be successful with this venture and Rafe knew without a shred of doubt that Eva would meet any challenge the expansion might bring.

Eva just had to believe it, too.
